Fullerton City Council Reduces Outdoor Dining Lease Rates to Support Local Restaurants

In a move to bolster the local dining scene, the Fullerton City Council has voted to reduce lease rates for restaurants utilizing public spaces for outdoor dining. This decision comes in response to financial challenges faced by several establishments under the previous rate structure.

Three years ago, the council implemented an index-based increase that nearly doubled the lease amounts for businesses wishing to use public rights-of-way for outdoor seating. This hike led to financial strain for some restaurants, with notable cases like Les Amis Restaurant & Lounge falling significantly behind on payments, resulting in the termination of their patio lease.

Recognizing the need for adjustment, Councilmember Nick Dunlap stated, “There’s a few things we can do to fix this, and I think it’s an easy fix. It’s obvious that the city got this wrong.” The council’s recent decision aims to make outdoor dining more accessible and sustainable for local businesses, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.

Restaurant owners and patrons alike have welcomed the change, anticipating a positive impact on Fullerton’s dining landscape. The reduced rates are expected to encourage more establishments to offer outdoor seating, enhancing the city’s appeal as a dining destination.
